The Stinson 108 Voyager Original Colors as delivered from Stinson By Larry Westin - February 25, 1996 Updated - Rev R - 01/18/09 My source for this list of original Stinson colors, as delivered form the factory, is SERVICE PARTS and ACCESSORIES LETTER number 1-D, dated April 2, 1948. It is easier to read this service letter than to get the 1946 and 1947 colors from the production records. 1948 color source is the Stinson Production record. My thanks to David Talley for providing this information. Each aircraft was delivered with two types of paint, DOPE which was used on the fabric, and LACQUER used on the metal surfaces. The product paint numbers are the numbers used to order the paint from Stinson, I do NOT know if they can be cross referenced at this time. Buying Stinson Colors today Purchasing the correct colors in 2005; Poly-Fiber has Stinson Maroon available in Aero Thane and Poly Tone, color number 197, Diana Cream is available in Aero Thane and Poly Tone, color number 131. Poly Fiber - Stinson Diana Cream 1947 & 1948 Poly Tone 131 is equivalent to Stinson Diana Cream dope 50006 Aero Thane 131 is equivalent to Stinson Diana Cream lacquer 50012. Poly Fiber - Stinson Maroon 1948 Poly Tone 197 is equivalent to Stinson Maroon dope 233-R-12. Aero Thane 197 is equivalent to Stinson Maroon lacquer 234-R-54. My thanks to Ted Sebern at for providing these Poly Fiber color numbers. CAUTION - request sample color sheets from manufactures, don't rely on colors you see on your PC. There is too much difference in my opinion between what the PC displays and reality. Also manufactures tend to stock only the most requested colors as standard. Paint manufactures may show on color charts many more colors which can be mixed from known settings. NOTE: All serial numbers are the dash number only. For example serial number 15 is actually 108-15. 1946 Colors Serial Number(s) Color Dope Lacquer 1 Chocolate Brown 50004 50008 and Green 233-G-3 226-G-32 2, 10-42 Chocolate Brown 50004 50008 and Orange Yellow 50002 50010 3, 6, 9, Insignia Blue 50003 50009 43-88, and Orange Yellow 50002 50010 91-166, 287-477 4, 7, 8 Chocolate Brown 50004 50008 and Stearman Vermillion See Note 1946-1 5 Insignia Blue 50003 50009 and Stearman Vermillion See Note 1946-1 89, 90 Maroon 231-R-54 266-R-25 167-286, and Gray 231-A-72 266-A-27 478-742 Note 1946-1, Stearman Vermillion was not carried by Stinson, but had to be purchased on the open market. 1947 Colors Originally I said all 1947 Stinson's have a stripe of only one color, Diana Cream. Diana Cream Stinson numbers are: Dope 50006, Lacquer 50012. Dave Talley sent me an email indicating this is in error, that the 193 Stinson's painted overall "Stinson Sand" used a darker stripe. Diana Cream would have provided only a very low contrast between the stripe and the overall color. Updated 01/18/09. My thanks to Dave Talley for bringing this to my attention. Interior colors were either Light Blue, Lacquer 266-B-41, or Dark Blue, Lacquer 266-B-40. 1947 Base Exterior Colors Serial Number(s) Color Dope Lacquer 743-762 Blue 13958 13959 783-884 Blue 2510-2639 Blue 3030-3109 Blue 3270-3349 Blue 3499-3500 Blue 763-772 Green 233-G-3 226-G-32 773-782 Red 233-R-8 226-R-31 885-1173 Red 1175-1209 Red 1730-1859 Red 1990-2184 Red 2380-2509 Red 1210-1304 Blue Stinson Number 3 50001 50007 1307-1469 Blue Stinson Number 3 1600-1729 Blue Stinson Number 3 1860-1932 Blue Stinson Number 3 1934-1942 Blue Stinson Number 3 1944-1989 Blue Stinson Number 3 1470-1514 Orange Yellow 50002 50010 1517-1522 Orange Yellow 1524-1599 Orange Yellow 2185-2302 Stinson Sand 50005 50011 2304-2379 Stinson Sand (Stinson Sand aircraft have a dark color stripe) 2640-2758 Red (Dupont) 233-R-8 50016 2760-2794 Red (Dupont) 2796-3029 Red (Dupont) 3110-3269 Red (Dupont) 3350-3406 Red (Dupont) 3408-3498 Red (Dupont) See Note 1947-1 below Several 1947 airplanes were delivered without standard paint 1174 Primer only, special paint 1305-1306 Primer only, not painted 1515-1516 Primer only, not painted 1523 Primer only, not painted 1933 Primer only, not painted 1943 Primer only, not painted 2303 Primer only, not painted 2759 Primer only, not painted, no registration numbers 2795 Primer only, not painted, no registration numbers 3407 Primer only, not painted Note 1947-1, This group of airplanes, serial numbers 2640-3029, 3110-3269 and 3350-3498, all use the same fabric dope, color labeled only as Red, Stinson 233-R-8. No comment is included in the production record about any special paint, so I assume it is the standard 108-3 paint scheme in Maroon color with a stripe of Diana Cream. Diana Cream Stinson numbers are: Dope 50006, Lacquer 50012. Serial Number(s) Color Dope Lacquer 4693 Maroon 233-R-12 234-R-54 If you find an error(s) please let me know. There is a lot of typing, and I may have entered a serial number incorrectly. Via E-Mail westin@tdstelme.net Postal Address Larry Westin 233 Pratt Road Newport, Maine 04953
